When Should You Change Your Tires?

Simple signs that show your tires are worn out and when it’s time to replace them for your safety.

Your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road. Knowing when to replace them can keep you safe and help you avoid bigger problems down the road.

1. Check the Tread Depth

Tread depth shows how much grip your tires have on the road. A simple way to check is the built-in tread wear indicators — small raised bars between the grooves. When the tread is level with these bars, it’s time to replace.

2. Look for Uneven Wear

If one side of your tire is more worn than the other, it could mean there’s an alignment or suspension issue. Uneven wear not only shortens tire life, but it also affects your car’s handling and braking. If you notice this, get your alignment checked before fitting new tires — otherwise the new set will wear out the same way.

3. Watch for Cracks or Bulges

Cracks in the sidewall or any bulges are signs of internal tire damage. These can be dangerous and may lead to a blowout, especially at higher speeds or in hot weather. If you see any deformation on the sidewall, don’t wait — have the tire inspected immediately.

4. Check the Age

Even if your tires look fine, rubber degrades over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires after 5 years, regardless of tread depth. You can find the manufacturing date on the sidewall — look for a four-digit code (e.g., 2223 means week 22 of 2023). In Lebanon’s hot climate, tire aging accelerates, so don’t skip this check.
