Warning signs to watch before your car leaves you stuck, and how to prevent it.
A car battery sometimes gives you warning signs. Knowing them can save you from being stranded at the worst possible time.
1. Slow Engine Crank
If your engine takes longer than usual to start — that sluggish, labored cranking sound — your battery is losing its charge capacity. This is the most common early warning sign. Don’t ignore it, especially heading into winter when batteries work harder.
2. Dimming Lights and Electrical Issues
A weakening battery can’t power all your car’s electrical systems fully. You might notice dimmer headlights, a slower power window, or a flickering dashboard. If these symptoms appear together, your battery is the likely culprit.
3. The Age Factor
Most car batteries last 3 to 5 years in normal conditions. In Lebanon’s hot climate, battery life can be shorter because heat accelerates the chemical degradation inside the battery. If your battery is over 3 years old, have it tested — even if it seems fine.
4. Swelling, Corrosion, or Bad Smell
A swollen battery case means internal overheating. White or blue-green corrosion on the terminals indicates acid leakage and poor connections. A rotten-egg smell means the battery is venting sulfur gas. Any of these means immediate replacement.
