Your rims take a beating from potholes, curbs, and rough roads. Small damage might seem cosmetic, but it can affect tire pressure, handling, and safety.
1. Types of Rim Damage
The most common issues are curb rash (scrapes along the outer edge), bends or dents from potholes, and cracks from hard impacts. Curb rash is mostly cosmetic, but bends and cracks are structural and can cause real problems.
2. When Rim Damage Becomes Dangerous
A bent rim won’t seal properly against the tire bead, causing slow air leaks and inconsistent pressure. A cracked rim can fail suddenly at speed. If your tire keeps losing pressure or you feel vibrations at highway speeds, have your rims inspected.
3. Can Damaged Rims Be Repaired?
Minor bends on steel rims can often be straightened. Alloy rims with small bends can sometimes be repaired, and cracked alloy rims can be repaired by welding minor cracks. At Round One, we inspect rim condition during every tire service and offer repair when possible.
