What to check on your car before a long drive to make sure you arrive safely and without surprises.
Whether you’re heading to the Cedars, driving to Tripoli, or taking a long weekend trip, a quick pre-trip check prevents the kind of problems that ruin a journey.
1. Tires
Check pressure on all four tires and the spare. Look for cracks, bulges, or low tread. If you’re heading to the mountains in winter, consider whether you need chains or winter tires. A blowout on a mountain road is dangerous and difficult to manage.
2. Fluids
Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. If any fluid is due for replacement based on your service schedule, do it before the trip — not after.
3. Brakes, Lights, and Wipers
Test your brakes before you leave. Make sure all headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are working. Check your wiper blades — mountain weather can change quickly, and you need clear visibility. Pack a warning triangle and reflective vest as required by law.
4. Emergency Kit
Carry a basic kit: jumper cables ( available at Round1), a flashlight, basic tools, a first aid kit, water, and your car’s owner manual. Make sure your phone is charged and you have roadside assistance contact information saved. Preparation takes 10 minutes — being stranded without it takes hours.
