A quick guide to wheel balancing, alignment issues, and what they can mean for your car.
A shaking steering wheel or vibrating car at speed is your car telling you something is off. The causes range from simple to serious, but none of them fix themselves.
1. Wheel Balancing Issues
The most common cause of vibration at highway speeds (80+ km/h) is unbalanced wheels. When the weight distribution around a wheel is uneven, it creates a wobble that you feel through the steering wheel. Rebalancing is quick and inexpensive — and should be done every time you install new tires or rotate them.
2. Alignment Problems
If the shaking comes with the car pulling to one side, alignment is likely off. Misalignment causes uneven tire wear and puts stress on suspension components. It’s especially common after hitting potholes or curbs, which are hard to avoid on many Lebanese roads.
3. Worn Suspension or Steering Components
Worn tie rods, ball joints, or wheel bearings could also be the cause of vibration. These components wear gradually, and the vibration gets worse over time. Left unchecked, they can compromise steering control.
