Why brake fluid degrades, how often to change it, and why topping it up is not the same as replacing it.
Brake fluid is the hydraulic link between your brake pedal and your brake calipers. When you press the pedal, fluid pressure is what actually pushes the pads against the rotors. If the fluid is degraded, your braking performance drops — sometimes dangerously.
1. Why Brake Fluid Degrades
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time, even in a sealed system. As water content increases, the fluid’s boiling point drops. Under hard braking, degraded fluid can boil, creating gas bubbles in the lines. Gas compresses (fluid doesn’t), so you get a soft or spongy pedal and reduced braking force. This is called brake fade, and it can happen exactly when you need your brakes most.
2. How Often to Change It
Most manufacturers recommend every 2 years or 40,000 km, whichever comes first. The interval matters more than mileage — brake fluid absorbs moisture whether you drive or not. If you drive in mountainous areas with long downhill stretches (common in Lebanon), your brakes work harder, and the fluid degrades faster.
3. Why You Should Never Just Top Up
Here’s a critical point most drivers don’t know: brake fluid level drops naturally as your brake pads wear down — the calipers extend further, holding more fluid. A low level usually means your pads are worn, not that fluid is leaking. Topping up masks the real issue (worn pads) and dilutes the existing fluid with fresh fluid, creating an inconsistent boiling point throughout the system. When it’s time to replace brake fluid, the entire system is flushed and refilled — not topped up.
4. What Happens If You Ignore It
Beyond the boiling-point risk, old brake fluid corrodes internal brake components — calipers, master cylinder, and ABS valves. These are expensive to replace and can lead to brake failure. A brake fluid flush is one of the cheapest services with one of the highest safety returns.
