Your car communicates through sounds, smells, vibrations, and warning lights. Learning to recognize these signals can save you from breakdowns and expensive repairs.
1. Unusual Sounds
Squealing when braking means worn pads. Clicking when turning may indicate worn CV joints. A humming that gets louder with speed could be a wheel bearing. Don’t turn up the radio — listen and act.
2. Strange Smells
Burning rubber could mean a slipping belt or tires rubbing against something. A sweet smell suggests coolant leaking onto hot engine parts. Burning oil has a sharp, acrid smell and means oil is leaking onto the exhaust. Rotten eggs may indicate a catalytic converter issue. Any of these warrants a visit to the garage.
3. Changes in How the Car Feels
Vibrations in the steering wheel, the car pulling to one side, a soft or spongy brake pedal, sluggish acceleration, or rougher-than-usual idle — these are all changes from how your car normally behaves. Trust your instincts. If something feels different, something probably is.
4. Dashboard Warning Lights
Don’t ignore them and don’t assume they’ll go away. A check engine light might be a loose gas cap or a failing sensor — but it could also be a misfire that damages your catalytic converter.
